Peanut Butter Oatmeal Crunchies

By jen | September 8, 2009

Sorry, but this one is for the doggies. I recently adopted a sweet pit mix who was one day — ONE DAY!!– away from being euthanized at the shelter before being pulled out by a local rescue. Unbelievable, seeing what a loving, affectionate dog he is. He wins the hearts of everyone he meets, especially when he tries to climb into their laps! I see it as part of my duty as dogmama to this much misunderstood and vilified breed to not only make sure he gets proper training to become a model canine citizen, but to spoil him with homemade treats. He seems to like these biscuits, and the boyfriend thinks they’re OK, too!

Look at this face! Wouldn't you bake him biscuits?

Ingredients
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup soybean flour
1/2 cup rolled oats
4 Tb peanut butter
1 Tb molasses
1 cup water

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a medium bowl, combine the flours and rolled oats. In a small bowl, combine the peanut butter, molasses and water and stir until completely mixed. Add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients and mix until a dough forms. If the dough is too dry or crumbly, sprinkle additional water (but not too much; you want a drier dough). Gently knead the dough a few times to make sure the wet and dry ingredients are completely combined.

Roll out the dough to about 1/4″ thickness and use small cookie cutters to form the biscuits. If, like me, you want to make them on the smaller side for training purposes, use a metal teaspoon-sized measuring spoon as a cookie cutter to cut the dough into bite-size pieces.

Place the shapes on a cookie sheet (no need to grease the pan) and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the biscuits are completely hard. Don’t forget to let them cool before giving them to your doggie (or partner)!

    awesome!
I was lured here by your mini cinnamon rolls, but I am so stoked for a vegan doggie cookie recipe. I have 3 nice doggies and I am going to make these treats for them right away. These look really easy and yummy (for the dogs, I mean)

ps. your dog is very cute!

linked to you from phil’s post discussion re: earth balance/palm oil (which i didn’t know about until now).

great blog! this post won me over! i have a staffordshire, too; her name is connie and she was also rescued from euthanasia (she was actually under the first injection so she was knocked out at time of rescue).

    what’s your dog’s name?

p.s. i eat the cookies i bake for connie all the time. just to check them out. can’t wait to try your recipe.

Thanks for the comments, Amey and br!

My dog’s name is Tiger (I think he was given that name because of his brown and orange brindle coat). It’s so great that you rescued Connie, br. How did the rescue manage pull her out in time? Staffordshires are great dogs! I never realized how much I would fall in love with the breed until I rescued Tiger and began meeting other dogs through his training classes.

    hey jen!

    tiger’s adorable. that face!

connie was one of five staffies that were rescued out of a kill shelter in aurora, ontario. the shelter i was volunteering at (i live in toronto) had trainers that knew someone in the aurora shelter and they got word that five staffies were being put down due to the by-law (we have BSL in ontario - it’s being fought, but slowgoing). but these trainers drove up to aurora and brought all five back to toronto! and that’s how i met connie (her name used to be mugsy). she changed my life, and she’s vegan!

i have a picture of her on my very boring, never updated blog if you want to see her face; in tiger i see connie, and in connie i see tiger: http://www.tooconcisetooclear.blogspot.com

staffordshire/bullies are the greatest. they’re such clowns, and so darn wonderful. it’s shocking to me that BSL exists. i want to flee sometimes but i’d like to wait and see things change here. i feel like good dogs can really show people how ridiculous, and illogical, BSL is.

    love your blog!

@br: Thanks, I’m glad you enjoy the blog! I’m working on being better at posting regular updates. Connie is SUCH a cutie pie!! She looks like she’s smiling in that photo. I think she could be a poster child for bully breeds. She’s so lucky to have a permanent home with someone who loves her so much.
